This June wedding at Wedgewood Weddings Boulder Creek started a little differently than most wedding days at this venue. Instead of starting with getting ready and mainly doing photos on-site, we met the couple at Betasso Preserve, which is only about seven minutes from the venue. It was a quiet and beautiful place to start the day with a first look, private vows, and some relaxed couple’s photos before heading over to Boulder Creek for the rest of the celebration.  It has rolling hills with pine trees.

The couple shared their first look at the park, followed by reading their vows privately. Private vows are always one of our favorite ways for couples to slow down the day before everything becomes more public and fast-moving. It gave them time to be together, take in the moment, and share something personal before joining everyone else. After their private vows, we spent some time taking couple’s portraits around the park.

After finishing photos at Bestasso Preserve, we headed over to Wedgewood Weddings Boulder Creek for more portraits around the venue. Their black dog, Rosie, joined them for photos, and she was absolutely adorable. She still had that puppy energy and wore a little floral collar, which made her even cuter. Including dogs in wedding photos always adds some personality, and Rosie definitely brought plenty of it. We took photos down by the creek, which gave the day a softer, more natural Boulder feel. From there, we moved into bridal party photos and family photos before the ceremony. Doing so many photos before the ceremony worked really well because it allowed the couple to enjoy cocktail hour with their guests instead of spending most of that time away taking pictures.

Their ceremony was small allowing it to be held down alongside the creek. This was a little different from other weddings we have photographed at Wedgewood Weddings Boulder Creek, where the ceremony setup is up in the grassy area. Having the ceremony by the water created a more intimate feel and gave us some unique angles to work with, while still being careful not to disturb the guests during the ceremony.

After the ceremony, the couple joined their guests for cocktail hour. It began to sprinkle a little, but it did not slow anything down. Guests had clear umbrellas and seemed to have fun with it, which made the light rain feel more like part of the day than a problem. Colorado weather can shift quickly in June, and this was a good example of a couple and their guests simply rolling with it. Cocktail hour also included one of the more memorable guest appearances of the day: a donkey carrying beer. Between Rosie, the creekside ceremony, the umbrellas, and the beer donkey, this wedding had a lot of personality packed into a small celebration.

After hors d’oeuvres and cocktail hour, everyone moved over into the tent for dinner. The dinner was lovely, and the layout made the reception feel warm and connected. Instead of having the bridal party separated at a traditional head table, they sat with the guests, while the couple had a family head table. That setup fit the smaller wedding well and made the evening feel more personal. After dinner, parents and siblings gave toasts. The speeches were heartfelt and helped carry the family-focused feeling of the evening. Once the toasts wrapped up, the couple shared the mother-son and father-daughter dances under the tent before everyone moved inside.

Inside the venue, the couple had a choreographed first dance. It was a fun shift in energy after the more emotional parts of the day and gave everyone a reason to gather around and cheer them on. After that, the dance floor opened up, and the celebration continued into the night.

For this wedding, the creek was used not only for portraits but also as the ceremony setting, which gave the day a more intimate and natural feel. The sound of the water, the trees, and the tucked-away setting helped create a ceremony space that felt different from a more traditional venue layout.

Because the venue is close to other nearby photo locations like Betasso Preserve, Boulder Creek, other mountain parks couples also have the option of building in a nearby first look or private vow location before heading to the venue. On the whole how ‘inclusive’ do you go with a venue.  We find that it can be a little scary to have photography included as when you go more inclusive you get lesser quality.  As illustrated with the DJ side of things – they were effective but never spoke to or interacted with us.  Perhaps cause he was training someone in college to do the job.  They never had any issues but having been to hundreds of weddings they lacked the ability to read the room when it comes to thier key part – music in the dancing part of the reception.  It was fine but when it comes to things like photography which are your memories you have from the wedding fine can be a little less than ideal.
