The ‘old’ Sapphire Point Overlook is one of those places where you can get an incredible Colorado mountain backdrop without needing a long hike or an entire evening for photos. For this couple, that made it the perfect spot for a short engagement session after the proposal and before their wedding. They mainly wanted a collection of photos they could use for their save the dates, so there was no need to turn it into a long engagement shoot. She wore a beautiful white dress while he dressed up as well, giving the session a much more formal look than the typical mountain engagement photos. With the way they were dressed against the mountains, it could easily have passed for a wedding day.

That wedding-day look actually worked surprisingly well because Sapphire Point was especially busy with tourists that day. The overlook is one of the most accessible mountain views near Breckenridge and Dillon, so sharing the area with other visitors is often part of photographing here. With her in white and both of them dressed formally, people naturally seemed to assume they were taking wedding photos and gave them a little extra space. It helped us work around the crowds and create photos that felt much more private than the overlook actually was at the time. You would never know from the finished images how many people were hanging out just outside the frame.

Colorado also gave us a gorgeous blue-sky day with a completely clear view across Dillon Reservoir and the surrounding mountains. There were no clouds hiding the peaks or weather moving through the valley, just the deep blue sky, lake, and layers of mountains stretching into the distance. That clean backdrop worked especially well with their formal clothing and her white dress. Rather than trying to make the session overly complicated, we could focus on the scenery and the two of them together. Sapphire Point did most of the work for us.

Because this was primarily about getting something beautiful for their save the dates, we kept the session intentionally short. A short engagement session can be perfect when you already have a specific purpose for the photos and don’t necessarily need hundreds of images or several different locations. We focused on a handful of different views, natural interactions, and portraits that showed off both the couple and the Colorado landscape. They were able to get the polished mountain engagement photos they wanted without turning it into a major part of their day. Sometimes twenty or thirty minutes in the right location is all you really need.

The combination of the white dress, dress clothing, blue skies, mountains, and Dillon Reservoir made these Sapphire Point engagement photos feel almost like a miniature wedding session. In reality, it was simply a quick post-proposal, pre-wedding photo shoot designed around creating something memorable for their save the dates. Even with a busy overlook full of visitors, we were able to use the landscape and a little careful positioning to make the mountains feel like they belonged entirely to them.
