Proposal Maroon Bells June Sunset
Maroon Bells June Proposal
Proposal Details:
They had already been together for many years, so when he decided it was finally time to propose, he wanted to create an experience that felt worthy of the moment. A work trip was bringing him to Aspen in June, and with her coming along, it created the perfect opportunity to plan something special without making the trip itself seem suspicious. Being a Florida girl, she loves beautiful sunsets, so finding somewhere with incredible scenery and the potential for a memorable Colorado sunset was important. The Maroon Bells offered everything he was looking for with mountains, water, and one of the most iconic views near Aspen. The plan was ultimately pretty simple: get her somewhere beautiful, let them enjoy the experience together, and surprise her with a proposal.
June in the Colorado mountains can bring almost anything, and on this evening there was some smoke in the air creating a little haze around the lush green pine tree mountains. It wasn’t quite the perfectly clear Colorado sky you might picture when planning a trip to the Maroon Bells, but it ended up working in our favor. The conditions seemed to keep some people away, leaving the area noticeably quieter and giving them something that can be hard to find at such a popular location—seclusion. Instead of navigating crowds around Maroon Lake, they had space to slow down and enjoy the evening together. The haze also softened the distant mountains and evening light, giving everything a slightly moodier look.
With the Maroon Bells rising behind them, they made their way to the spot we had planned along the lake. She still thought they were simply out enjoying one of Colorado’s most beautiful places, while he knew exactly what was about to happen. After years together, he got down on one knee and finally asked her to marry him. Her reaction was filled with the kind of surprise, laughter, and emotion that makes photographing a proposal so much fun. Once she said yes, there was no longer any need for secrets, and the rest of the evening became a chance for them to simply enjoy being newly engaged.
After the proposal, we explored the area around Maroon Lake for engagement photos while watching the light change over the mountains. For someone who loves sunsets, Colorado still managed to deliver something beautiful even through the smoky air. Rather than a bright, crystal-clear sunset, the haze created softer light and a more subdued atmosphere around the peaks. With fewer people around, we had more freedom to photograph them naturally without the evening feeling like we were constantly working around crowds. What initially looked like less-than-perfect conditions ended up helping create a much more private experience.
Planning a proposal at the Maroon Bells is always a little unpredictable because mountain weather, crowds, seasonal access, and lighting can all change the experience. That is also part of what makes proposals here so unique, because no two evenings ever look exactly the same. For these two, a June work trip to Aspen turned into a secluded evening beneath some of Colorado’s most recognizable mountains. The smoky haze wasn’t something anyone would have specifically requested, but it helped give them the privacy he had been hoping to find. After years together and a lot of planning to give his Florida girl an unforgettable experience, the Maroon Bells became the place where their next chapter began.
