Mountain Proposal in the Rain for the AdventurousProposal Details:
Imagine a proposal moment like in the movie Notebook. Bryan and Samantha were not in a boat on a lake but one thing they did have come was a thunderstorm. They were doing dinner halfway up Flagstaff Mountain at the Flagstaff House. Doing dinner before is not something we would normally recommend as it then gives you less flexibility. Come to think of it this was the first time we have had a proposal where they did dinner before the proposal. Either way, as dinner was wrapping up another thunderstorm popped up so they got some desert and made their way up the mountain. Upon getting up to the overlook area they went the opposite direction than planned. As a storm with some hail just passed through no one was really around up there so most places looked rather secluded. As we have shot up there enough we know the terrain and what we can get from certain angles. If you were to go here on a normal day you will find a ton of people around you in the photo so please do not propose where he did. Thankfully he got the spirit of the proposal plan with the line of sight with her at the right angle to the camera. This matters more than the perfect spot any day. When they got out of the car the trees were shedding some water and the sun came out. Everything was looking good. It then started to rain again as they proposal came. We will note that this was rather rare and more related to the tropical storm that was passing through the area.
While we will say that for most this would be a nightmare this actual was highly romantic and unique. We say this however not to encourage shooting in the rain but that they owned it as an adventurous couple. Shooting in the rain will cause some blur from rain coming between the couple and the camera. It will also produce some streaks or specks of water depending on the shutter speed of the camera. While our equipment is pro level and weather sealed so we can shoot in those conditions there will be impact to the image quality so we would not recommend it. Those are the negatives.
For the positives there will likely be no one around, you might get a rainbow, and you will get some unique lighting. The full rainbow will be something we are sure to get someone to want to risk the rain in order to get. It was awesome and consider it more the perk of getting rained on when getting engaged. Outside of the adventurous spirit something else to note is how much she wants to be with him. She never shows the signs of wanting to go and seemed completely unfazed by the rain.
You can get proposal ideas from reading past blogs and read about how we do proposals on our engagement proposals page. If you like what you see here and are considering using this location here are some of the other shoots we have done at Flagstaff Mountain. One thing to note is this is what we call the ‘alternate spot’ down a side trail.
