Proposal | Lost Gulch Overlook | Photoshoot
You Thought it Was an Engagement SessionProposal Details:
We have photographed a lot of proposals but this was the first one that the girlfriend booked. For Justin and Wendy did this mean she was pushing the proposal, got down on one knee, or even knew it was going to happen? A resounding nope to all of those. He had gone through one of her friends to plant the idea of getting a photo session while in Colorado. We actually did not know that the couples photoshoot would contain a proposal until after the booking. Our take is that they were already engaged and just wanted to get an engagement session in out here on vacation. He played it up as him being hesitant to want to get a shoot but was really directing things behind the scenes. As for what they envisioned Brainard Lake was the preferred location containing mountains and a lake. The combo of those two things can be a little difficult as they will depend on the time of year. In this case while it was still early spring and we would have had some trekking through snow the weather through a bit of a curveball in the way for us. While it might sound off in May when it is sunny and 80 back home we got 4-5 feet of fresh snow up at the photoshoot location. Add that to the 1 to 6 feet of leftover snow and you have 5-11 feet of snow to wade through for a couple miles from the winter parking lot (if you could even get that far). This is why we think we need to have a snowmobile for the business. It might be a questionable tax deduction but seriously it would be helpful.
With Brainard Lake out and the clouds rolling in daily the morning was the ideal time. We landed at going to Lost Gulch Overlook for the proposal. Incase you love the spot in comparison to the other used please note being hidden does not work in this spot so it would need to be a planned photoshoot that had a proposal in it. We started off with it to crank up the emotions for the shoot. It was the morning so the lighting was a little harder to work with for us as it was to the face rather than to the back. This just means it is not as clean on the faces. After some photos there as we were planning to go to another spot the realization hit that not too far down the road there is this newly discovered location called Gross Reservoir. While the mountains are not big there is a body of water in there that would be closer to what they were envisioning. We wrapped up the shoot there before they took some exploring in their Jeep Wrangler.
If you like this location here are some other Gross Reservoir photoshoots on the blog. You can get proposal ideas from reading past blogs and read about how we do proposals on our engagement proposals page.
